Azure Window - Dwejra

Photo: www.malta.com

The Azure Window is a natural arch made up of Lower Coralline Limestone on the Maltese island of Gozo. It is situated near Dwejra Bay on the Inland Sea. The formation which is very popular with scuba divers was created after two limestone sea caves collapsed.

The waters around the arch are suitable for swimming, scuba diving, and boating.

The Azure Window has been featured in films, such as Clash of the Titans (1981) and The Count of Monte Cristo (2002). It can also be seen in the television miniseries The Odyssey (1997), and HBO's TV series Game of Thrones.

This tourist attraction is 5 minutes away by car from Ta' Sant' Antnin farmhouse. For those who would love to walk and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding nature, this attraction is around 20 minutes by walk from the farmhouse.

Inland Sea - Dwejra

The Inland Sea is a lagoon of seawater on the island of Gozo linked to the Mediterranean Sea through a narrow natural arch.

On one side there is a gently shelving stony beach with several fishermen's huts. The bottom of the lagoon is also mostly pebbles and rocks and is fairly shallow.

On calm days fishing boats, known in Maltese as 'luzzijiet', can pass through the tunnel. Some of the boats are used to take visitors through the archway and then for a tour of the nearby cliffs and other sites, mainly to the Fungus Rock and another large natural arch in the cliffs called the Azure Window.

This is 2 mins by walk from the Azure Window.

Wied il-Mielah (Mielah Valley - Gharb)

This valley is situated on the outskirts of the village of Gharb. It is very popular with locals and tourists for country walks and picnics. Another naturally formed window (similar to that found in Dwejra but on a much smaller scale) is also found here.

Citadel - Victoria, Gozo

One cannot visit Gozo and not visit the Citadel which is a historic fortified city or castle which lies in the heart of Victoria, the capital city of Gozo.Citadel is on Malta's tentative list of future World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, who describe it as a small fortified town.

The area is known to have been first fortified during the Bronze Age c. 1500 BC. It was later developed by the Phoenicians and continued development until, by Roman times, it had become a complex Acropolis. During the Middle Ages it was known as the Gran Castello. Up until Fort Chambray was built in the 18th century it was the only fortified refuge against attack for the inhabitants of the island.

Gharb Square

The ancient roots of this village can be clearly seen in its square which shows off some rustic balconies. The baroque church in the middle is one of the finest examples of baroque art on the islands. In fact, such a photo is a very famous postcard in the islands. The church has an elegant facade which has been compared with Francesco Borromini's Church of Saint Agnes in Piazza Navona, Rome.

One can enjoy this atmosphere by night by dining in a restaurant found in the square. While enjoying the baroque scene around you, you will also taste the life of the villagers that although they work in other towns and villages in Gozo and also in Malta, they still remained attached to their roots and opted to live in this beautiful village.

In the square, there is a folklore museum housing all sorts of memorabilia retelling the Islands' rural history. Għarb lies in some of Gozo's most scenic countryside, particularly at Dbiegi, the highest hill on the Island. Also at Dbiegi is a centre for Gozitan crafts.
